Proverb 8:11 Profiting From Wisdom Instead Of Rubies

Men and women have been chasing the dream of wealth and fame from the beginning of time. The American dream was once based upon the understanding that fame and fortune comes through thrift and hard work. During the Colonial Period, Benjamin Franklin counseled people on the "The Way to Wealth." Poor Richard's Almanac advised that "Early to Bed, and early to rise, makes a Man healthy, wealthy, and wise." Poor Richard insisted that the key to wealth was to be industrious, because that is what pay's the bills and thus makes one's life easier. 

Sadly, in today's modern world the understanding is that one can get rich and famous instantly by winning the lottery, hitting the jackpot at the local casino, writing and singing the song that makes the young girls cry, getting a reality TV show, going to Hollywood to get recognized, or just winning a lawsuit over a spilled cup of hot coffee. The idea isn't new, wanting to rich that is. It's the understanding of how to do it that has changed. 

Few consider what the result of measuring one's worth by how many toys they truly have will be. All they can think of is, "He who dies with the most toys wins the game of life".


That is truly a sad understanding of what this life is truly about. As much as most seem to believe, this life we are given is not about wealth nor the fame we gain. It's about the path you take to the next stage of your souls existence. As a Christian, we understand that financial success is one indication that God approves of our hard work.  As long as we do not worship that which we earned, we will achieve the coveted state of grace. With diligence in our walk with Christ we will be granted a place with Christ in Heaven. Jesus was in the region of Caesarea Philippi, when He told His followers;

"Whoever desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel's will save it. For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?" Mark 8:34-36

Proverb 8:11 should be a reminder to all that Silver, gold, rubies, and I will add fame, are not as important as gaining knowledge and wisdom. There are many wealthy famous people who ended up taking their lives, because they believed man's wisdom that it is the rubies of life that matters. No, it's not the rubies of life which other men can see that matters. It's who we are inside, that only God cans see, which that matters.

11 For wisdom is better than rubies, And all the things one may desire cannot be compared with her. Proverb 8:11

In Matthew chapter 23, Jesus took the scribes and Pharisees to task, because of the way they falsely acted and carried themselves before the people they were supposed to lead for God. He called them whitewashed tombs that were clean on the outside but had nothing but dead man bones inside.

"Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs which indeed appear beautiful outwardly, but inside are full of dead men's bones and all uncleanness. Even so you also outwardly appear righteous to men, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness" Matthew 8:27-28

So many lose track of what matters to God, because we are so focused on what matters to our friends and relatives. We want the giant plasma television, with a nice roof over our heads in the best neighborhoods where our children can go to the best schools while not worrying about bills and surviving from month to month. On one hand that makes perfect sense, because we all have immediate needs with desires for what's best for us and our children. However, when we focus on short-term needs and desires, sometimes we make really poor decisions that will affect us in the long term. We might give up opportunities for education, or ruin a relationship, or get caught up in a habit or addiction that can harm us a lot.

Wisdom is the idea that we are able to look at the whole picture before us, not just what's fulfilling at the time. I speak of course of God's Wisdom, not man's wisdom. God's Wisdom is taking all matters before us, and putting them in the context of our present, our future, and our eternal goals. Balancing the things we need now with what we are going to need later. Instead of a desperate now-now-now thinking that so many get trapped in way too often. It is the ability to step back and consider the future so that we can make better choices. Truth is, when we chose the path of chasing fame and fortune, were are in effect selecting the rubies of life which is man's wisdom over God's.

As Christians, we need to understand that when we put the emphasis on the eternal rather than the temporal, we can then be assured that God will take care of the things we need in the world. This is why I firmly believe each and every Christian should read a Proverb each day. It's my desire that everyone will learn to depend on God's Wisdom over man's. Thus we can be assured that the things we have control over in this world will be filled with blessings instead of trials and tribulations brought upon by our own foolishness. It isn't nearly as difficult as you may think. James tells us that all we need is to ask for God's Wisdom and and have faith He will bless us with it.

If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him, but let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. James 1:5-6

I would pry that we all can work on this, and soon we will all find ourselves worrying less about the rubies of life. God bless each and every one of you.

Wisdom Is Everlasting

Ten Reasons Santa Must Be A Conservative Republican

​We find ourselves at the doorstep of Christmas again, so in the spirit of the Season, and just so I can be fair and equitable with my political opinions, I have decided to share what I think of Santa’s political persuasion.  Now, do not think that I'm putting a nonexistent, beloved, character on the same level as Jesus, I'm not. So lighten up all you Francis's out there, and try not to misconstrue the meaning of this article. I offer it as a simple, fun explanation of how I see Democrats and what I think Santa’s political leanings would be. If he existed, and if he would ever vote.

To begin with, when I wrote this many years ago, I pointed out that Santa could not be a Liberal Democrat. Well, I dropped the word "Liberal" and just use Democrat now. After all, Democrats today are all full blown Commies. Plus I originally had eight reasons, but have decided to add two more reasons for a total of ten reasons why Santa must be a Conservative Republican.

In The Beginning God Created

There is a disturbing trend that has taken hold of the modern day Christian community, and it is my opinion that this trend is causing a schism as big as the one that was addressed at the Council of Nicea over the Trinity. Now this is not a debate for those who have no faith in Christ, for what accord has Christ with Belial? 

No, this is strictly a debate for those who profess Christ as their Lord and Savior. Unfortunately, those who attempt to address the problem are usually labeled as rabble-rousers who only wish to spread discontent within the ranks of Christendom. This trend I speak of, is the compromising of the Word with the idea of evolution known as theistic evolution or Old Earth Creationism. I say “compromise”, because in the 150 years since Darwin offered his theory of evolution, the only side in the argument that has offered to compromise its position has been the Christian side. I have yet to see the evolutionary camp temper it's teachings to include God anywhere in the equation of creation.

Prover 6:1-5 Never Become Indebted To A Friend

One of the most idiotic things anyone can do is to co-sign for a loan. Regardless of who you are helping, the statistics prove that the co-signer ends up paying the loan off over 50% of the time. Consider the reason one would ask you to co-sign for them. They know you will pay the loan off if they cannot, and their track record proves they either don't pay off their debt, or they never had a loan before.

The Scripture I have chosen to comment on today's Proverb, are verses 1-5.

My son, if you become surety for your friend,
If you have shaken hands in pledge for a stranger,
You are snared by the words of your mouth;
You are taken by the words of your mouth.
So do this, my son, and deliver yourself;
For you have come into the hand of your friend:
Go and humble yourself;
Plead with your friend.
Give no sleep to your eyes,
Nor slumber to your eyelids.
Deliver yourself like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter,
And like a bird from the hand of the fowler.

Proverb 6:1-5

OK, I know we love our children, but the best way to help them is to not set them up for failure. So instead of co-signing on a loan from a bank for them, you would be better off purchasing the car outright and give it to them as a gift. If you cannot afford it, them maybe give them the money for a down payment as a gift. Notice I said gift, not loan. However, the best thing is to find them a used car they can afford or give them the bus schedule and tell them to save up some money for a used car. (usually the bigger the down payment they have, the more likely a loan can be obtained).

Let's say a friend needs help and they ask if you would co-sign for them. I would seriously consider the damage it would do to your relationship should you have to pay off the loan. Your relationship will never be the same, as resentment, anger, and betrayal could follow towards your former good friend. You can, and you should forgive them, but it will likely never be totally forgotten, and the trust will be shattered forever. Ultimately, co-signing is just not worth risking this damage.

Consider what other passages in the Bible say about putting yourself in debt for another person?

(Prov 17:18) A man devoid of understanding shakes hands in a pledge, And becomes surety for his friend.

(Prov 11:15) He who is surety for a stranger will suffer, But one who hates being surety is secure.

(Prov 20:16) Take the garment of one who is surety for a stranger, And hold it as a pledge when it is for a seductress.

(Prov 22:26-27) Do not be one of those who shakes hands in a pledge, One of those who is surety for debts; If you have nothing with which to pay, Why should he take away your bed from under you?

So, co-signing means that: "you are devoid of understanding," "you will suffer," "you have been snared," “you could lose your bed"). I admit I am not as knowledgeable as a banker on loans, but I do have a credit rating that is over 850 and I did not get it by co-signing on loans for friends and family members I know are not trustworthy.

Here are a few rules I offer that will keep you from destroying a friendship, ruining your credit, or setting your child up for failure.
"Don't co-sign for your kids to get student loans."
"Don't co-sign for your kids to get car loans."
"Don't co-sign for your mom to get a house."
"Don't co-sign, because you're going to end up paying it, and it's stupid. Don't co-sign ever.
"Never, under any circumstances, ever co-sign."
"Co-signing is one of the dumbest financial things you can do."
"There is no reason to ever co-sign."

Strict I know, but common logical sense is a black and white fact, and the only way to protect yourself is to keep from putting yourself in danger of being in debt for a friend, relative, or child.

Now let's say your friend, relative, or child in a place that you cannot see them getting on with life without the loan. Well then get the loan, or purchase the item they need yourself. That way you will have total control over the property, car, or whatever the loan is for. The person you are taking out the loan for can make then the payments to you. If they default on the payments to you, then you can sell the property you own to recoup your loss.

If you still feel the desire to help another, then consider what Proverb 19:17 says;

He who has pity on the poor lends to the LORD, And He will pay back what he has given

So help them with the understanding that you may have to pay the loan off yourself, and make a promise in your heart that you will forgive and forget the failure of the person to keep up their end of the deal. In the end, the Lord will restore that which you lost and reward you for your kindness.

Ultimately, co-signing is just not worth the potential harm it can cause, because it can ruin your financial health, your credit rating, and your ability to get a loan for yourself in the future. It can and often does ruin relationships.

I pray that those who have ears to hear will hear His voice and call upon the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Is There A Parallel Spiritual World?

In today's technological age, it might seem silly for intelligent people to consider a spiritual world where beings we cannot see might exist. Oh it's fine to read books and watch Hollywood movies about the afterlife and spirits that roam the netherworld but that's all make believe, not the real world. In the real world we are taught that reality consists of what we can touch, taste, see, hear, smell, and that the spirit world is for those weak minded individuals who use religion as a crutch to get through the day.

However, what if I told you that scientists have concluded that there is a strong possibility that a parallel universe really does exist? Now, as a Christian I do not need proof that a spirit world exists, but it is my belief that God wants us to do our utmost to understand what it is He has Created.That being said, the Spirit World is an aspect of God's Creation that we can only speculate upon just as Rene Descartes, the father of modern day philosophy did. Descartes admitted that God was the Creator of the world, but he believed that the spiritual world existed solely in the minds of men. So I guess the question would be, does a parallel spirit world exist, or is it just a figment of our fertile imaginations?

You Will Be Hated By All For My Name’s Sake

“And you will be hated by all for My name’s sake" Mark 13:13

This is what Jesus said would happen to those who follow Him. We have been in the midst of what is a Worldwide persecution of Christians. Many think America is immune, and for years we had it easy, but the time has come, and it is already here when even Christians are being persecuted for His names sake. For no tother reason than Satan's minions have the power, and like their father the devil, they hate everything about Christ Jesus.

"Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and kill you, and you will be hated by all nations for My name's sake. And then many will be offended, will betray one another, and will hate one another. Then many false prophets will rise up and deceive many. And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold. But he who endures to the end shall be saved." Matthew 24:9-13

Delusions of Evolution

It is with out a doubt that a majority of Americans still believe “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” Genesis 1:1. Unfortunately, most who believe these words cannot answer the questions raised by the thousands of fossils that archeologist's have dug up and claim are millions of years old.

 We are told that such methods as Radiocarbon tests to find the levels of Carbon-14 remaining in fossils, U-Pb dating of volcanic materials to determine how long ago lava cooled, helioseismic dating to get a helium diffusion age in the field of astrophysics, and many more scientific fields and the methods they use can baffle the minds of even the most educated believers of God. 

Sadly, depending on what poll you read, this vast amount of technology has convinced 30% to 40% of believers that God must have used evolution in His creative process.

However, what if I told you that many scientists, archaeologists, biochemists, physicists, micro biologists, and astronomers disagree with most of the findings and conclusions by today's evolutionist experts? Some of these men even go so far as to challenge the very idea that the universe is billions of years old. It is important to remember that the age of the universe is directly related to the science used to convince people of the age of planet earth.

Never Back Down To Political Correctness

Churches need to stop being at the mercy of the liberal mindset, the government, or even their own congregations and start being at the mercy of God.

Clergy long ago spoke the truth to their flock, during the revolutionary war, and after. They would not only minister to the families, they would be involved in the daily lives of the people. They would fight next to them in battle, walk with them many hard miles in cold harsh winters.

They did not sit comfortably by while their flock suffered. Pastors would guide and direct their churches. They would instruct them on many issues in life. They did not walk around on their tip toes among their church family, instead they would lead them, they would help them to pave the way in many areas of life.

Proverb 5:21 Consider God as you Ponder Your Path

You ever been sitting in the house, and out of the corner of your eye, you spot something moving along the corner of the wall?  Or maybe you’re lying in bed and you hear some scraping and scratching, the patter of teeny tiny feet in the attic? When you have a mouse on the loose around the house, then you need to set a trap or two.

Everyone has their idea of what the perfect food is to trap the mouse. Cheese, peanut butter, or maybe a piece of sweet chocolate The idea is to use something that will attract the mouse over. Then when the mouse takes the bate, it meets it's maker. Well humans are no different, and neither is Satan. The only difference is the bate. If you take the bate that Satan sets out for you it could cost you your very soul.

Every choice we make in our life can be seen by the Lord. Even if we just make that choice in our heart by desiring it to happen. We are told by Christ that we are just as guilty as if we did the action. Matthew 5:28. The point being, the LORD knows everything. So keep in mind that every step you take can be a step into a trap that could lead you to spiritual destruction.

So Judge yourself in everything you do, and in every step you take. Consider the destination that will be your future, because if you don't judge yourself, then be prepared to face God on judgement day. We learn from Psalms 1:5-6 that the ungodly shall stand in the judgment, while those who choose wisely will live to stand in the congregation of righteous and gain eternal life.

A Christian's Worldview

Matthew Henry on Proverb 5:21

“For the ways of man are before the eyes of the LORD, and He ponders all his paths.” Pro_5:21. Those that live in this sin promise themselves secresy (the eye of the adulterer waits for the twilight, Job_24:15); but to what purpose, when it cannot be hidden from God? For, 1. He sees it. The ways of man, all his motions, all his actions, are before the eyes of the Lord, all the workings of the heart and all the outgoings of the life, that which is done ever so secretly and disguised ever so artfully. God sees it in a true light, and knows it with all its causes, circumstances, and consequences. He does not cast an eye upon men's ways now and then, but they are always actually in his view and under his inspection; and darest thou sin against God in his sight, and do that wickedness under his eye which thou durst not do in the presence of a man like thyself? 2. He will call the sinner to an account for it; for he not only sees, but ponders all his goings, judges concerning them, as one that will shortly judge the sinner for them. Every action is weighed, and shall be brought into judgment (Ecc_12:14), which is a good reason why we should ponder the path of our feet (Pro_4:26), and so judge ourselves that we may not be judged.

Proverb 4:23 Keep Your heart With All Diligence

Though the Old Testament book of Proverbs contains God's wisdom for people of all age groups, it is uniquely a book for young people. I believe God's Spirit led King Solomon to write and record these wise bits of instruction to help youth avoid the sort of mistakes and moral failures that will rob them of joy and well-being as adults. Today's commentary on verse Proverb 4:23, comes from Bethany Bible Church

Keep your heart with all diligence,
00 For out of it spring the issues of life. Proverb 4:23

Often in the book of Proverbs, Solomon writes almost as if he's talking one-on-one with a young person. He warns this young person about the dangers of hanging around with the wrong crowd, or about dabbling in sexual sins, or about being undisciplined in behavior. He encourages this young person to reverence God and to pay careful attention to good, godly counsel. He encourages this young person to cling tightly to the sort of "wisdom for living" that comes only from God. There are thirty-one chapters in Proverbs - a chapter for every day of the month. I heard that Dr. Billy Graham has read a chapter a day from Proverbs for years now. The practical matters of our lives would go a whole lot better if we did the same.

Notice how King Solomon speaks in Proverbs 4:20-27 - the section in which this verse is found. You can almost feel the sense of urgency and seriousness with which Solomon speaks.

My son, give attention to my words; incline your ear to my sayings. Do not let them depart from your eyes; keep them in the midst of your heart; for they are life to those who find them, and health to all their flesh (Proverbs 4:20-22).

Plainly, Solomon is longing for this young person to take hold of what he's about to say. It's as if he is trying to tell him something that will make all the difference in his life. And can you also notice how all-encompassing his message to this young man is? Those who hear and keep his words, he says, find life and health to their body! What he is about to tell this young man is of crucial importance. All of his life will be affected by it.

He then goes on to say;

Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life. Put away from you a deceitful mouth, and put perverse lips far from you. Let your eyes look straight ahead, and your eyelids look right before you. Ponder the path of your feet, and let all your ways be established. Do not turn to the right or the left; remove your foot from evil (Proverb 4: 23-27).

When you read this, the word that should pop into your mind is, "discernment" - the ability to determine and choose the good from the bad, the right from the wrong. It's a characteristic of maturity to be discerning.

Infants lack discernment. Toddlers have only one drive in life in relation to everything they see: put it in the mouth! A small child crawling on the kitchen floor will find a Cheerio under the chair - and into the mouth it goes. He finds a potato-chip fragment - and into the mouth it goes. But he doesn't care if the thing is edible or not. If he finds a broken piece of purple crayon - into the mouth it goes. If he finds a dead bug - into the mouth it goes. Little children lack the important ability to be discerning.

Many adults lack that same characteristic when it comes to their own heart. They don't discriminate between what's good for them, and what's bad. They will let just about anything contaminate their spiritual life. They often spend more times guarding and protecting their property than their soul. They spend more time watching their diet than their spirit. They spend more time scrutinizing their financial assets than their thought-life. They fail to watch their heart; and they suffer loss as a result.

When King David, Solomon's father, fell horribly into sin, he became a broken man before God. His brokenness is recorded for us in Psalm 51. There, we find these words: "the sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, a broken and contrite heart - these, O God, You will not despise" (Proverb 4:17). David's great prayer request was, "Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me" (Proverb 4:10).

I believe that is a prayer request God delights to answer. Let's follow David's example. Let's present to God the sacrifice of a broken and contrite heart; and let's ask Him to create a "new heart" within us. Let's bring ourselves to the foot of the cross of Jesus Christ - with all our sin and failure - and experience the forgiveness God purchased for us there. And then, let's watch over our hearts with all diligence; because from it flow the issues of life.

Proverb 4 (NKJV)
Security in Wisdom

1 Hear, my children, the instruction of a father,
And give attention to know understanding;
2 For I give you good doctrine:
Do not forsake my law.
3 When I was my father's son,
Tender and the only one in the sight of my mother,
4 He also taught me, and said to me:
"Let your heart retain my words;
Keep my commands, and live.
5 Get wisdom! Get understanding!
Do not forget, nor turn away from the words of my mouth.
6 Do not forsake her, and she will preserve you;
Love her, and she will keep you.
7 Wisdom is the principal thing;
Therefore get wisdom.

Who Will Take The Son?

I offer a story about a man and his beloved son.

 

The Christmas season is upon us, and I want everyone to remember that Christmas is not about the exterior things of this Holiday season. It’s about the Man this child would become. The Man who would one day be nailed to a cross and lifted like a snake in the desert for our sins.

I am posting the picture of the Ladies of Windchime retirment center, only because I am in the process of recovering many old commentaries I wrote, and turning many of my sermon notes and Bible study notes into commentaries. Obviously as I do, my mind races with wonderful memories of these lovely ladies. By the time I met them, my own mother had gone home to the Lord. For me, these ladies filled an emotional void one loses when their parents pass away. I honor these women for many reasons. One is for the way they helped tutor me as I taught them. Many of them had been Christians for years, some since they were young teens girls. Five of them were widows of men of the cloth. They were all very sweet to me in my trials with much positive encouragement and a friendly correction now and then, if they felt it was needed after a message.

Proverb 3:5-6 Lean Not On Your Own Understanding

Trust in the LORD with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths. (Proverb 3:5-6)

Ever wonder what you would do if your leader told you to drive into the Ocean after he parted the waters? Would you still have enough faith to trust in the God your leader trusts? Would you have enough faith that the waters would be held back until you got to the other side? Well at the time when Pharaoh's army had the Israelites trapped between him and the Red Sea, the faith of the Israelites was very weak. (Exodus 14) At any sign of troubles they were ready to leave Moses and his God to go back to Egypt and the bondage of slavery.

Kind of like so many of us Christians today. At the first sign of trials and tribulations we are so quick to give up on Him, just as the Israelites did time and time again. Moses told the people to have faith and trust in the Lord who brought them out of bondage. Instead they romanticized the life they had in Egypt. Forgetting all about the whips, and drudgery of slave labor they were forced into. All they could remember was the food they ate, not the suffering they endured at the hands of the task masters, while despising the food from heaven God gave them.

“We remember the fish which we ate freely in Egypt, the cucumbers, the melons, the leeks, the onions, and the garlic; but now our whole being is dried up; there is nothing at all except this manna before our eyes!” (Numbers11:4-5)

Their complaining and attitude about their circumstances made Moses so angry that when God told him to speak to the rock to bring water, he instead lashed out with his staff and struck it twice. God then told Moses, because he disobeyed Him that he and Aaron would not enter into the promised land.

Then the LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron, “Because you did not believe Me, to hallow Me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore you shall not bring this assembly into the land which I have given them.” (Numbers20:12)

Their lack of faith caused Moses to lose his chance to enter the promised land. Sometimes anger can backfire and hurt you instead of those it's intended for, even if you think they deserve your wrath. Well, the continued lack of faith, caused them to wonder in the desert for 40 years. While their children, whom they claimed to be worried about if they went into the land of Canaan, were the ones to possess the land. As for them? One by one they all died in the desert, as did Moses and Aaron.

Don't be like those who perished in the wilderness.

Be confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ. (Philippians 1:6)

So have faith, look to the future, and never look back. Don't be like the Israelites or Lot's wife, who looked back and longed for the life she had. She became a pillar of salt and lost her chance at salvation from the destruction that destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.

But his wife looked back behind him, and she became a pillar of salt. (Genesis 19:26)

Never look back longingly for the old days by romanticizing the life you once had when you were in bondage to sin. Understand that this Desert we must travel through has many trials and tribulations, but the promise of a new world is ours for the taking. Continue fighting the good fight, and one day you will possess the promised land.

Man Regurgitated From Whale, Lives To Tell About It

I originally wrote this back on 12/4/10, which 
is almost exactly 10 years ago.  Well, Jonah is as 
 relevant today as it was then and 2000 years ago.

Jonah lived about 170 years after the division of Israel into two kingdoms, when Nineveh was coming to the end of its reign as the leading power in the region. Nineveh had spread so much fear among its enemies that most Israelites prayed for a judgment upon it the likes of which happened to Sodom and Gomorrah. So when God called upon Jonah to go and preach to the people of Nineveh, he had different plans. Jonah 1:1-3

It's a great honor to be chosen by God to be a leader, or in Jonah's case a prophet of God. However, with positions of authority comes the responsibility of carrying out tasks that we may not like. Jonah was confronted with such a dilemma.

Proverb 2:6 For The Lord Gives Wisdom

The ability to believe the Scriptures is within the hearts of each and every human being. However, because we have hardened our hearts we cannot believe. We need to humble ourselves and ask for Christ to enter our hearts. Then He will transform our heart of stone into one of flesh (Ezekiel 36:26), Once that happens our faith will grow, and with faith comes the knowledge and wisdom which can only come from the One true God. 

If we truly are repentant, He will be true to His Word and unlock the door to that faith. Once it is believed and received by faith, a whole new world of our God is open to us. Jesus comes into our spirit and changes us, and that is when we begin our journey in the development of a relationship with our heavenly Father. It is then that the scriptures become a "Treasure Trove of Wisdom, Knowledge, and Understanding".

"For the LORD gives wisdom;
From His mouth come knowledge and understanding; (Proverbs 2:6)

When you become a born again Christian, the treasure of God is opened unto you. All the treasures of His mind are now available for you to use. Like a treasure hunter who is searching for diamonds, gold, and silver, once he finds it he ceases. Then he begins a journey as a collector of that which he  found. When you find Christ, you begin your journey of collecting His treasure of knowledge and wisdom, which is "The mind of God." 1Corinthians 1:30

I know people who dismiss the Bible by claiming, "It’s for the weak minded people." Back in the 1990s, a certain Atheist Governor was famous for claiming religion, “"Is a sham and a crutch for weak-minded people who need strength in numbers." I must admit, religion is a sham, but those of us who are Christian are not religious, we are followers of the one true God. Who are blessed that His Son shed His blood on the cross so our sins can be washed away forever. 

Years ago that statement make me mad, but I came to realize that men like him fools who put their faith in the wisdom of the World. One day men whose hearts are of stone like his will be feeding the fire of damnation. Today I feel as Jesus did when He was on the cross and said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do. Luke 23:34 Doesn't mean they will be saved, but our hearts will be blessed because we followed His example by doing His will not ours.

 As we seek to know the Lord and do His will, He protects us. He becomes our shield. He protects those who seek to walk in integrity. He takes care of us. He guards the paths of justice for His children. Injustice runs rampant in this world. And it also comes to the house of God’'s children. When it does, if we will handle it with integrity and trust in the Lord, He will ultimately vindicate the righteous.

We have all experienced injustice. I have seen many injustices throughout my life against others and even had many directed at myself. I've been lied to and lied about. I have been misquoted, misunderstood and maligned. I have been cheated, shortchanged and disrespected. I have been used. And I must confess there were times where I wanted to retaliate against those injustices. What happened to me was wrong. They say it takes more of a man to walk away from a fight than it does to give in to one. Sadly I admit I have retaliated against many by getting into fights when I was much. I won a few and lost a few, but once I met Christ I had a change of heart. I realized that when I give a grievance to Him, He will fight my battles. 

When the time of man expires and all is revealed, God’s justice for His children will prevail. Until then we must trust in Him in all things. It’s difficult when things happen in our lives that we don’t have answers for. When we struggle we wonder why and at times will ask, "Where are you Lord?"  Where were you when I needed you the most?” I'm reminded of the footprints in the sand poem, where we ultimately learn that we were not alone, Christ was always there for us. It was His strength that carried us through the pain. Without Him, we may very well have committed suicide, but His love held us tight, and gave us the strength to get past some of the most difficult moments in our lives. 

Now, I no longer fight against the hate, and injustices as I did when I was younger. I now give it to Christ, and let Him fight my battles. You may wonder what all this has to do with wisdom, but it's the wisdom of Christ that gives us the knowledge so that we will truly understand that He is always with us, and will continue the good work He began. It is but one of the things that comes to us as we gain the Wisdom of God.

The Value of Wisdom

01) My son, if you receive my words,
00 And treasure my commands within you,
02) So that you incline your ear to wisdom,
00 And apply your heart to understanding;
03) Yes, if you cry out for discernment,
00 And lift up your voice for understanding,
04) If you seek her as silver,
00 And search for her as for hidden treasures;
05) Then you will understand the fear of the LORD,
00 And find the knowledge of God.
06) For the LORD gives wisdom;
00 From His mouth come knowledge and understanding;

Proverb 1 Wisdoms Call

Many actually believe chapters 1 to 9 are Proverbs, but in fact 9 chapters were originally written more as an introduction to Proverbs, whereas chapter 10 is where Solomon's Proverbs actually begin. From here on forth, most of the proverbs are short an pithy, with two sentences in one verse.

These verses correspond with each other by an opposition of terms and sentiments. The second verse is contrasted with the first by illustrating an opposite action or result from different behavior. Seldom is there any coherence between the verses, much less any discussion as most the vast majority of Scripture gives us. The purpose of these proverbs is to set before us good and evil, the blessing and the curse. Many of the proverbs in this particular chapter, (ch 10) is related to the good government of the tongue, without which men’s religion is vain.

The purpose of Writing the book of Proverbs was to reveal the mind of God in matters high and lofty and in common, ordinary, everyday situations. It appears that no topic escaped King Solomon's attention. Matters pertaining to personal conduct, sexual relations, business, wealth, charity, ambition, discipline, debt, child-rearing, character, alcohol, politics, revenge, and Godliness are among the many topics covered in this rich collection of wise sayings.
Without wisdom, knowledge is nothing more than an accumulation of raw facts, influenced by emotional feelings. Many highly educated people are in positions of power in the United States, but very few of those educated leaders have the wisdom needed to rule properly. 

One can say that they have been educated well beyond their intelligence. A cursory look at the court system will prove my point that knowledge without wisdom will only lead to an immoral society that eventually crumbles from within. Judges are supposed to be above the fray, and immovable to emotions. Instead, the vast majority of judges today are Godless individuals who are vacant of wisdom. So their rulings are totally based upon emotional feeling. 

We the people are to blame, because we ignored God's guidance in appointing our leaders. Instead of putting leaders full wisdom in power, we instead chose those who would scratch our itchy ears to lead us. 

Of the 31 Proverbs, only the first 24 were written by Solomon. King Hezekiah wrote 5, Proverbs 25 to 29, Agur wrote Proverb 30, and Lemuel wrote Proverb 31. Now many believe Lemuel was in fact King Solomon and Lemuel was just a nick name his Mother, Bathsheba gave him. We are told that Solomon write over 4000 Proverbs and composed 1000 songs, but the only Proverbs written by Solomon that God decided to preserve are the first first 24, as I pointed out. Like the New Testament epistle by James, it is impossible to get a chronological outline for a study since they all bounce from subject to subject. 

Aong with my daily routine of reading the Bible, I try to read through the book of Proverbs once a Month. It's an easy task when you consider there are 31 Proverbs. So all you need to know is what day of the Month it is. In the Months that have 30 days, or in the case of February, I just double up by reading more than one two proverb so I can begin the next month with Proverb 1 on the first again.

What follows is a cursory look at Proverb 1 with some Scriptures for parallel study.

1-33 After the title the writer defines the design and nature of the instructions of the book. He paternally invites attention to those instructions and warns his readers against the enticements of the wicked. In a beautiful personification, wisdom is then introduced in a most solemn and impressive manner, publicly inviting men to receive its teachings, warning those who reject, and encouraging those who accept, the proffered instructions.

2. To know . . . instruction--literally, "for knowing," that is, such is the design of these writings.
wisdom--or the use of the best means for the best ends, is generally employed in this book for true piety.
instruction--discipline, by which men are trained.
to perceive--literally, "for perceiving," the design (as above)
understanding--that is, words which enable one to discern good and evil.

3. To receive . . . of wisdom--For receiving that discipline which discretion imparts. The Hebrew for "wisdom" differs from that of Proverbs 1:2 , and denotes rather discreet counsel. Compare the opposite traits of the fool ( Proverbs 16:22 ).
justice . . . equity--all the attributes of one upright in all his relations to God and man.

4. simple--one easily led to good or evil; so the parallel.
young man--one inexperienced.
subtilty--or prudence ( Proverbs 3:21 , 5:21 ).
discretion--literally, "device," both qualities, either good or bad, according to their use. Here good, as they imply wariness by which to escape evil and find good.

5, 6. Such writings the wise, who pursue right ends by right means, will value.
learning--not the act, but matter of it.
wise counsels--or the art and principles of governing.

6. To understand--so as to . . . such will be the result.
interpretation--(Compare Margin).
words of the wise--(Compare Proverbs 1:2 ).
dark sayings--(Compare Psalms 49:4 , John 16:25;

7. The fear of the Lord--the principle of true piety (compare Proverbs 2:5 , Proverbs 14:26 Proverbs 14:27 , Job 28:28 , Psalms 34:11 , 111:10 , Acts 9:31 ).
beginning--first part, foundation.
fools--the stupid and indifferent to God's character and government; hence the wicked.

8. My son--This paternal form denotes a tender regard for the reader. Filial sentiments rank next to piety towards God, and ensure most distinguished rewards (compare Proverbs 6:20 , Ephesians 6:2 Ephesians 6:3 ).

9. On the figures of Proverbs 1:9 , compare Genesis 41:42 , Solomon 1:10 , 4:9.

10-19. A solemn warning against temptation.
entice--literally, "open the way."
consent . . . not--Sin is in consenting or yielding to temptation, not in being tempted.

11-14. Murder and robbery are given as specific illustrations.
lay wait . . . lurk privily--express an effort and hope for successful concealment.
swallow . . . grave--utterly destroy the victim and traces of the crime ( Numbers 16:33 , Psalms 55:15 ). Abundant rewards of villainy are promised as the fruits of this easy and safe course.

15, 16. The society of the wicked (way or path) is dangerous. Avoid the beginnings of sin ( Proverbs 4:14 , Psalms 1:1 , 119:101.

17-19. Men warned ought to escape danger as birds instinctively avoid visibly spread nets. But stupid sinners rush to their own ruin ( Psalms 9:16 ), and, greedy of gain, succeed in the very schemes which destroy them ( 1 Timothy 6:10 ), not only failing to catch others, but procuring their own destruction.

20-33. Some interpreters regard this address as the language of the Son of God under the name of Wisdom (compare Luke 11:49 ). Others think that wisdom, as the divine attribute specially employed in acts of counsel and admonition, is here personified, and represents God. In either case the address is a most solemn and divine admonition, whose matter and spirit are eminently evangelical and impressive
Wisdom--literally, "Wisdoms," the plural used either because of the unusual sense, or as indicative of the great excellency of wisdom (compare Proverbs 9:1 ).
streets--or most public places, not secretly.

21. The publicity further indicated by terms designating places of most common resort.

22. simple ones--(Compare Proverbs 1:4 ).
simplicity--implying ignorance.
scorners--( Psalms 1:1 )--who despise, as well as reject, truth.
fools--Though a different word is used from that of Proverbs 1:7 , yet it is of the same meaning.

23. reproof--implying conviction deserving it (compare John 16:8 , Margin).
pour out--abundantly impart.
my spirit--whether of wisdom personified, or of Christ, a divine agent.

24. stretched . . . hand--Earnestness, especially in beseeching, is denoted by the figure (compare Job 11:13 , Psalms 68:31 , 88:9 ).

25. set at naught--rejected as of no value.
would none of--literally, "were not willing or inclined to it."

26, 27. In their extreme distress He will not only refuse help, but aggravate it by derision.

27. fear--the object of it.
desolation--literally, "a tumultuous noise," denoting their utter confusion.
destruction--or calamity ( Proverbs 1:26 ) compared to a whirlwind, as to fatal rapidity.
distress--( Psalms 4:1 , 44:11 ).
anguish--a state of inextricable oppression, the deepest despair.

28. Now no prayers or most diligent seeking will avail ( Proverbs 8:17 ).

29, 30. The sinner's infatuated rejection brings his ruin.

31. fruit . . . way--result of conduct ( Isaiah 3:10 , Ezekiel 11:21 , Romans 6:21 , Galatians 6:7 Galatians 6:8 ).
be filled--even to repletion ( Psalms 123:4 ).

32. turning away--that is, from the call of Proverbs 1:23 .
simple--as in Proverbs 1:22 .
prosperity--quiet, implying indifference.

33. dwell safely--literally, "in confidence" ( Deuteronomy 12:10 ).
be quiet--or at ease, in real prosperity.

17 Surely, in vain the net is spread

The Call of Wisdom

20 Wisdom calls aloud outside;
00 She raises her voice in the open squares.
21 She cries out in the chief concourses,
00 At the openings of the gates in the city
00 She speaks her words:
22 "How long, you simple ones, will you love simplicity?
00 For scorners delight in their scorning,
00 And fools hate knowledge.
23 Turn at my rebuke;
00 Surely I will pour out my spirit on you;
00 I will make my words known to you.
24 Because I have called and you refused,
00 I have stretched out my hand and no one regarded,
25 Because you disdained all my counsel,
00 And would have none of my rebuke,
26 I also will laugh at your calamity;
00 I will mock when your terror comes,
27 When your terror comes like a storm,
00 And your destruction comes like a whirlwind,
00 When distress and anguish come upon you.

28 "Then they will call on me, but I will not answer;
00 They will seek me diligently, but they will not find me.
29 Because they hated knowledge
00 And did not choose the fear of the LORD,
30 They would have none of my counsel
00 And despised my every rebuke.
31 Therefore they shall eat the fruit of their own way,
00 And be filled to the full with their own fancies.
32 For the turning away of the simple will slay them,
00 And the complacency of fools will destroy them;
33 But whoever listens to me will dwell safely,
00 And will be secure, without fear of evil."

You and I Are Barabbas

Like our sin that goes away never to be brought up again by God, so too is Barabbas to history. Neither Christian nor Jewish writings, ever mention Barabbas again. Barrabas was the scapegoat which was released into the wilderness, so that the Levitical ceremonial law of sacrifice  could be fulfilled by Christ. 

The word scapegoat means something entirely opposite from what it meant at the time the King James version of the Bible was wrote. Today, the word is used most often in sports media. It 's used when a particular player or coach is being blamed for a team's poor performance in a game or season. The person receiving the brunt of the blame game is called the scapegoat. The rest of the team is free from blame and the scapegoat is blamed as the reason for a lack of success.

Proverb 30 Who Ascended or Descended?

The proverb asks if you know the name of the One who Who ascended to and descended from heaven, the One gathered the wind in His fists, the One who bound the waters into a garment, the One who established all the ends of the earth. It asks if you know the name of Him, or His Son's name. Some 900 years before Jesus was born, Solomon knew that God's Son would appear on earth. A prophecy bound up in a proverb. Long before the Pharisees would accuse Him of equating Himself with God, Solomon knew God's Son who would descend from heaven.

We are drawing close to the End of Times, and there is absolutely nothing more important in life than being born again of the Spirit of God; to know that you are saved from eternal death and judgment and that you have an assurance that you are going to heaven because you have been born into His family, into His Kingdom; to be set free from the burden of sin, and be able to experience God's forgiveness, peace and power. 

This has all been freely provided by an unmerited grace through the atoning sacrifice on Calvary of His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ. This is the Gospel that was proclaimed by the angels at His birth some 900 years after Agur was moved by the Spirit of God to ask us if we know what His name is. It has since been preached throughout the entire world.
